Marking Time is an homage to women artists with deep ties to the American South—such as Agnes Martin, Alma Thomas, and the Gee’s Bend quilters—whose work has profoundly shaped Grassi’s practice. The series merges modernist abstraction with textile and craft traditions, blurring the boundaries between painting and weaving, narrative and form, technology and tradition. In this body of work, Grassi continues her visual language and her ongoing practice of honoring the legacies of women artists, scientists, and mathematicians—especially those whose stories remain largely unknown—creating layered, rhythmic compositions that reflect on memory, labor, and the passage of time.
